Planning:

Fill your tank. Check your water and oil levels. Buy your map, or download your app. Check your tyres, wipers, gauges and lights. Pack your bag with food, clothes, shoes and some cash for essentials. Then take a look at some of these amazing roads that you can drive on.

  1. The North Coast 500, Scotland

Like the Proclaimers walking 500 miles and 500 more, this road helps you find yourself, and forget everything else. It has the best of what Scotland can offer. With mountains, hills, craggy coastlines, historic castles, tiny fishing villages and peaty whiskey distilleries. Like a good whiskey, it gets better with age and experience. Driving the first time you might feel that you must truly focus on the road. The second time around, you might take your time, enjoy the views, and wind the windows down to feel the Scottish air on your face. It is not an easy road to drive. With the isolated beauty all around you, it is an experience that will definitely help you forget we are in lockdown and crisis.

  1. The Atlantic Highway, England

From the far north to the deep south. The coastal road around the beautiful bays and beaches of Devon and Cornwall provide an escape that looks like somewhere in Europe. Watch out for the surfers by the coast and animals on Exmoor.  Enjoy sea food in Padstow, Cornish Pasties, Bude for sun, sea and surf and Newquay for the parties. Lands End was once thought of as the end of the world, and when you get there, you will see why. All you can see if miles and miles of nothingness.

  1. Coastal Circuit, Northern Ireland

You have driven the best that Scotland has to offer, now try the Irish comparison. You have drank the Scottish Whiskey, now you can compare to the Irish version too. Which do you like best?

This trip has it all. From coastal drives, small B-Roads into tiny villages forgotten by time, and the famous Gobbins Cliff Path. If you are a fan of Game of Thrones you might recognize the countryside around these roads. If you are a fan of Whiskey, the Old Bushmills Distillery is en route, however, don’t drink and drive! Save it for later, you will deserve a dram after finishing this drive!

  1. The Black Mountain Pass, Wales

To complete the UK, we can not forget Wales. Saving the shortest drive for last, this can be done in a day, but we wouldn’t recommend it. There is so much to see, so many walks to explore and so much beauty everywhere. Take your time and soak in the Welsh mountainous countryside. This road was made popular by the famous TV Show, Top Gear. It has become a popular place for test drives and people wanting to test their driving skills. It is recommended that you take the North to south route of the road for the best views, curves, and driving experience.

      5. Stelvio Pass, Italy

Why not try something further afield? With the Easter holidays coming up, taking your car away to Europe could be a great get away.  Lockdowns and road blocks could get in the way! The stunning Alpine views are not blocked by guard rails here, so do not get distracted as you tame the sharp turns and the 9,000ft drops on either side.

  1. Furka Pass, Switzerland

I am sure that you remember the driving scenes in Goldfinger. Driving one of the most iconic cars, on the most iconic Alpine roads by one of the best actors of his generation, the movie experience will come flooding back on this famous (and dangerous) road.

  1. Death Road, Bolivia

The most dangerous road in the world has to get a mention in the driving experiences here. It might be a bit far to drive to, so there are car rental companies offering a car for the day for the bravest of people to tackle a road that causes over 300 deaths a year on a regular basis. From the heights of the mountains of the Andes, down steep slopes to the rain forests of the Amazon the views are awesome. Not many drivers get to experience the views, due to the shear drops, tight corners and bus drivers hogging the road.

Wherever you want to escape to, make sure that you have a car that suits the journey, you have a warrantee to cover any damage, you have the best insurance, and you are well prepared. Driving is to be enjoyed. Here at Match Me, we love a good drive, we are all about the car and the driving experience and we can help you get the most from your vehicle.
